Perth caused a huge upset by beating reigning Premiers Subiaco by 15 points in wet and cold conditions at Lathlain Park on Saturday.

On a heavy ground the match was always going to be a real sluggish affair and it was the home side through Laine Wilkins who kicked the first goal of the match. The Lions soon answered with a goal to Brett Mahoney until forward Kristian Cary gave the Demons a handy lead of 5 points at quarter time.

The second quarter saw both team’s fail to score a goal as conditions became even worse to play in. Perth was being well served by Clint Jones and Julian Jacobs and held a 6 point lead at the main break.

The third term saw Perth continue to gain plenty of the ball with mobile Ruckman Todd Stevenson playing a great game. Brennan Stack bobbed up to kick his first goal, however Subiaco soon responded with a goal of their own with Perth now holding a 9 point lead at three quarter time.

Both sides’ came out in the last quarter knowing the game was now really up for grabs and after a quick major to the Lions they closed within just 2 points. Perth fans were thrilled when Stack kicked a critical goal to increase the Demon’s lead and then when Cody Leggett kicked a long bomb the home crowd was able to cheer on an exciting victory.

The win was the club’s third in a row and certainly one of great character as they continue their winning streak.

Jacobs and Jones both continued their outstanding seasons raking up important possessions throughout the four quarters and were well served by Stack up forward and Stevenson in the Ruck.

Next week Perth has a bye and then is back at home playing Peel in a crucial match to keep alive their finals hopes.
