English wins Jack Clarke Medal, daylight second

Young midfielder Luke English on Wednesday night took home the 2017 Jack Clarke Medal as the WAFL's best-and-fairest colt.

English (53 votes) took home the medal in convincing fashion, finishing 22 votes clear of Claremont's Jack Lewsey (31 votes) in second.

What's more frightening than English's 22 vote win is the fact that he played the entire 2017 season as a 16-year-old and is eligible to play colts for another two years.

English averaged 25 possessions and five tackles a game in 2017, and collected 30 disposals or over on eight occassions. He polled votes in 15 of his 19 games.

To cap off a memorable night for the 179cm midfielder, he also took home the Colts Coaches Award as the competition's most valuable player voted by the coaches and was named in the 2017 colts team of the year.

Perth Football Operations Manager Dale Ballantyne said English's hard work was rewarded last night.

"He had a taste of colts footy towards the end of 2016 as a back pocket," Ballantyne said.

"He took it upon himself to have a big preseason so he could work his way in to the midfield, which he was able to do and do well."

Ballantyne said English would be invited to do a senior preseason over the summer.

"Luke will be invited down but we won't rush him," Ballantyne said.

"If he's ready, he'll be managed through a senior preseaon but that's something we need to sit down with him and discuss."

English also took home the Jack Ensor Medal as Perth's best and fairest colt on Friday night with 132 votes.

Caelen Bennell (96 votes) and Maverick Hamilton (84 votes) rounded out the top three.
