PREMIERSHIP PLAYERS GET CLUB UPDATE

Monday, October 18, 2021 - 9:42 AM

League coach Garry Moss and co-captain Fraser McInnes were special guests at the annual reunion lunch of players from Perth’s most successful era – the teams that achieved the hat trick of premierships in 1966-67-68.

They presented a summary of the club’s performance during the past season which started with great promise before the league side was hit by injuries. But work had already started on ensuring there was no repetition in 2022.

It was like old times with Mal Atwell – the club’s most successful coach – in deep conversation with star rover Barry Cable who produced “best on ground” performances to win three Simpson Medals in the successful grand finals.

One of Mal’s tactical triumphs was in the 1967 decider when he surprisingly lined up at full forward against his old side, East Perth, and kicked six goals. Gerry Isegar, who notched four from the half forward line in the same game, was also present.

Allan Stiles welcomed the players and their wives and partners, and also expressed appreciation to past player and generous supporter, Graham Hardie, for providing his Rambla on Swan restaurant on the South Perth foreshore for the popular occasion.

The players might be moving a little slower than in their heyday, but the conversation was just as  animated as they swapped highlights from both on and off the field.
