State Youth AFL 9's Tournament

Tuesday, March 11, 2014 - 2:16 PM

The search is on for the best Youth AFL 9s team in the state, with registrations opening this week for the inaugural AFL 9s Youth State Tournament.

The event will be held at Britannia Reserve, Leederville on Wednesday April 16.

AFL 9s is the Australian Football League’s fun, fast and exciting alternative version of the game.

It’s a little bit different to the traditional game.  Some of the key differences with AFL 9s include:

- It’s 9 a side on a smaller field with three zones

- Players must start in their zones but can then run anywhere

- Forwards are the only players permitted to score but players rotate between positions throughout the game

- There is no tackling, it’s ‘touch football’.

- A mark is awarded irrespective of the distance the ball has travelled.

- If the ball hits the ground it is an automatic turnover.

The WAFC is encouraging participation by both school & club teams, as well as those who don’t currently play football.  The great thing about AFL 9s is the fact that anyone can play!

The winners of each division will play at half time of an AFL match later on in the year.

The entry fee for the tournament is $150 for a team of up to 15 players.  On the day of the tournament, teams will play a minimum of four games and any finals they qualify for.
