The Benefit of Resilience
In all facets of life and none more evident than in sport, we encounter moments that the little voices in our heads saying "It's too tough" and "It's easier to give it away". Too often over the past three seasons young men faced up to this realisation and folded, giving it away. They possess all the talent and ability, but not the resilience and mental strength to push on or to make the changes needed to step up.

Excellence in Coaching Awards are presented each year to football coaches who have shown excellence and measurable achievements through quality coaching techniques over a number of years. From these nominations the "J J Leonard Medal" for Coach of the Year, “Ken Armstrong Community Coach” of the Year and the “Greg Brehaut Memorial Scholarship” will be selected. These awards are presented in recognition of three stalwarts of our national game in Western Australia. This year “Coach of the Year” awards will also be awarded in the following categories:
- Auskick,
- Modified Rules,
- Youth,
- Senior Community
- Female.
The criteria for the above awards are presented below:
JJ Leonard MedalThe coach MUST
Be an accredited coach to minimal Level 2
Must have contributed to the education of coaches
Have given outstanding service to football coaching
Have been a practising coach for at least three years
Be effective in their coaching ability and provide a positive learning environment
Be an effective planner on an annual, monthly, weekly and match day
Have demonstrated a proven high performance record
Have contributed significantly to the development of the game.
Be able to communicate and co-operate well with players, umpires and club administrators
Have the confidence and respect of players, officials and volunteers.
Greg Brehaut Memorial ScholarshipThe coach MUST
Be an accredited coach minimum Level 1
Have been a practising coach or coaching staff member for at least one year
Be effective in their coaching ability and provide a positive learning environment
Be an effective planner on an annual, monthly, weekly and match day
Have demonstrated a proven record in player development
Be prepared to contribute to the development of the game
Be able to communicate and co-operate well with players, umpires and club administrators
Have the confidence and respect of players, officials and volunteers.
Youth and Ken Armstrong Senior Community Coach of the YearThe coach MUST
Be an accredited coach at level 2 status or working towards Level 2.
Have been a practising coach or coaching staff member for at least two years
Be effective in their coaching ability and provide a positive learning environment
Have maintained the Code of Conduct and set minimum coaching standards
Be an effective planner on an annual, monthly, weekly and match day
Have demonstrated a proven record in player development
Be prepared to contribute to the development of the game
Be able to communicate and co-operate well with players, parents, administrators and umpires
Have the confidence and respect players, officials and volunteers.
Auskick and Modified Rules Coach of the YearThe coach MUST
Be an accredited coach minimum Level 1
Have been a practising coach or coaching staff member for at least two years
Be effective in their coaching ability and provide a positive learning environment
Be an effective planner on a weekly and match day basis
Have demonstrated a proven record in player enjoyment and satisfaction¨
Be prepared to contribute to the development of the game
Be able to communicate and co-operate well with players, parents, administrators and umpires
Have the confidence and respect of players, officials and volunteers.
Female Coach of the YearThe coach MUST
Be an accredited coach minimum Level 1
Have been a practising coach or coaching staff member for at least two years in any level of the game
Be effective in their coaching ability with a sound knowledge of the game and provide a positive learning environment
Be an effective planner on an annual, monthly, weekly and match day
Have demonstrated a proven record in player development
Be prepared to contribute to the development of the game
Be able to communicate and co-operate well with players, umpires and club administrators
Have the confidence and respect of both players, officials and volunteers
